Our writing programme....

We thought our families might like to see what we do in Room 1 when it is writing time.
Our first step each day is to think of a great story idea. We choose one person to come up the front to share their idea.
It is Seth's turn to sit in the story chair. He has decided that he would like us to write about his new bike.
We sit on the mat and tell each other the story idea so that we have it clear in our heads.
Today's story is: I have a new bike at my house.
Then it is time to write our story in our class 'Writing Book.'
We pull out each word so that we can try and hear as many sounds as possible.
Mrs Bargh writes down the letter sounds that we can hear.
When we have finished writing Seth reads us his story.
The second time we all try reading his story.
Our next step is to split into 3 groups.
The first group have a turn at writing their own story.
They are working on looking for the sounds on their alphabet cards.
The second group are drawing a picture to match their story. These children are publishing the story that they wrote yesterday in their books.
Then it is time to read our stories.
We practise reading our stories in front of the whole class.
Look at Stella's great finger pointing!
The third group practise language games to help learn the alphabet and the early words. It will be their time to write with the teacher tomorrow.

Room 1 would love you to come and see their writing books!

Welcome to 2014!

What an exciting start to the year! A very big welcome to all our new Merrin families.
Thank you for coming along to our 'Fish and Chip Evening' and our P.T.A Valentine's Picnic.
Our school met together on our first Wednesday for a Mihi Whakatauki.
Ms Dillon Roberts welcomed all the new children and new teachers to Merrin School.
Our Kapa Haka group were amazing.
Here we are on our 1st day of school!
Ms Dillion-Roberts loves to come and visit us to hear about all the new activities that we are trying.
We planted some herb seeds in a special seedling box.
These herbs will go into our Whetu Gardens.
We also have some tadpoles that we are watching carefully to see how long it will be before they get their back legs.
At cafe time we made popcorn for the letter 'p'.
Tessa showed us the money envelopes that she was given as part of her Chinese New Year celebrations. We have more of her photos in our class 'News Book.'
Here is the amazing Kylie putting our NEW JELLY BEAN TABLE together. Look at those muscles!
We enjoyed hosting 1st Year Students from the University of Canterbury who came to see what we do in Room 1. They enjoyed reading to us. Thanks!
Oliver made this fantastic robot at our first Discovery Time of the year.
Here we are dancing to 'Alice the Camel.'
We are lucky that Vicky is spending 4 weeks with us. She is a teacher trainee from Korea.

We are looking forward to having so much fun this year!

A week to say thank you...

We would like to send out a HUGE thank you to the amazing parents on the FAIR COMMITTEE!
Wow...the fair was fantastic and we really appreciate all the hard work that you have put in for weeks and weeks and weeks!
On Thursday we has a visit from Tilly's mum Emma. She works as a dental therapist and she came to talk to us about keeping our teeth healthy.
Emma told us we have 20 teeth and we will have 32 by the time we are adults. Teeth are the hardest thing in our bodies.
Emma showed us a short DVD about looking after a teeth and Tamai had a go and showing us how to brush them carefully.
Thanks Emma for reminding us to brush our teeth twice a day!
Eni made a gorgeous cake for Hannah's birthday. It was beautiful to look at and delicious.
Her decorative cakes are in the school newsletter this week. Thank you for sending one to school!

Warren had a Ninja Turtle painted on his arm!
Here is Klaudia with a unicorn painted on her face.
Tracie and Rod had plenty of cool drinks to keep us cool.
Oska and Cara got matching dragons painted.

Jacob was so busy playIng he hardly had time for a photo!
Look at the size of that banana cake....but wait...there was a chocolate cake the same size!!

Welcome to Term 4!

We hope that everyone had a refreshing holiday -free of chicken pox!
On Monday we had 'Buddy Time' with Room 15. They came to help us with an experiment called 'Volcanic Canisters'. We tried it last term when we did our Inquiry on 'Bubbles' and the experiment was a real fizzer!
Room 15 had done some research for us and they suggested that we try putting two
alka seltzer tablets in the water, instead of one.
We put the lids on the film canisters very tightly.
The lids exploded sky high! Thanks Room 15 for your help.
At 'Fiona's Fabulous Cafe' we made fairy bread. We enjoyed it so much that we are going to make some more at 'Discovery Time' on Friday.
Jordyn has a new puppy called Odyn. As you can see he is very excited. He is a rescued dog and very loved!
On Thursday we had a visit from Michelle who works at the ASB Bank. She came to talk to us about money.
Sometimes Michelle is a super hero called 'Cashtastic"!
First we discussed the values of the notes. We were able to name the people who have their picture on these notes.
Next we looked at the different values of the coins.
Michelle was very pleased to hear that we have been talking money during our maths sessions.
She taught us a jingle that says, " Speed to your needs and wait for your wants." That means that we can't always buy the things we want. We have to save our money for them.
Charlotte was chosen to do a role play with Michelle. She pretended to be a little girl called Aroha.
Aroha was good at putting her pocket money into to 3 jars. The jars said 'saving', 'spending' and 'sharing'. Aroha saved enough money to buy a spotty scarf.
We really enjoyed having Michelle visit. She was very funny and we hope that she comes back to Merrin another day.

Don't forget that we need our swimming togs for next Wednesday!
